While its development began early in the Second World War Lockheed's P-2 Neptune wasn't introduced into service until 1947 mostly due to low funding priority. Designed to be a patrol aircraft that was both easy to build and maintain the Neptune has seen worldwide success in a variety of roles a number of which were never intended by the original designers. The P-2 was involved in the Vietnam conflict as an American gunship and patrol plane and it saw combat with the Argentine Navy in a number of conflicts including the Falklands War. The DC-7 was introduced in 1953 built by Douglas after American Airlines requested a long-range airliner for its use. The DC-7 was very successful in its day pioneering a number of new long-distance flights for various operators but it was rather quickly overshadowed by newer jet-powered aircraft in the passenger travel market. Douglas developed a conversion package for DC-7 variants to turn them into airborne freighters which extended their service life significantly.
