Modern and Healthy Hostess Gift Ideas

Forget the macadamia chocolate cookies and the dusty bottle of wine you found under the counter. Bring the hostess a healthy and modern hostess gift instead. When you attend a dinner party or a small hosted event at a friend's or relatives, it's good manners to bring along a hostess gift. The idea of a hostess gift is to give something to the hostess which she may choose to share or serve or use at the party. The hostess gift is not the same as the bottle of wine or dessert tray you were asked to bring to the party.

The hostess gift does not have to be elaborate but it should be thoughtful. Modern hostess gifts can have a healthy twist.

  1. Consider a gift the hostess can use to pamper herself after the guest have gone.
  2. Look for a gift which reminds you of the hostess in some way.
  3. Keep her health and well-being in mind and skip the store-bought cookies.
  4. Place the gift in a small basket or a gift bag. This makes it festive without being too formal. A perfectly wrapped gift feels like it needs to be reciprocated. A simple ribbon, an organza bag or a colorful gift bag all work.
  5. Attach a small note, "For the hostess" or "Thanks for having us" to the gift and sign your name.

Oil Go Lightly

Grapeseed oil is one of the lightest most delicious and delicate cooking oils around. If you live in an area with local wineries, check the wineries for grapeseed oil. Some of them make it. Otherwise, buy a nice bottle of grapeseed oil for under $10, less than a bottle of wine. Wrap a sparkly bow around the oil and bring a loaf of crusty homemade French bread. The grapeseed oil is a great gift for a health-conscious hostess, or as a belated housewarming gift.

Nuts for a Nutcracker

Your health-minded hostess knows the benefits of shelled nuts. Without any added salt or preservatives, shelled nuts are the perfect snack and a "good" source of fat. This sleek nutcracker is ideal for cracking nuts without the mess.

Place the nutcracker in a basket of mixed shelled nuts. The nuts can be placed in a bag and then into the basket. If you want to spend more, buy two or three nutcrackers for the hostess gift.

The Salt of Life

Add to her spice collection with a collection of gourmet salts. Unless your hostess is worried about her blood pressure, a bit of flavorful salts may be just what she needs to spice up her everyday cooking. Salt is not the bad spice in the rack, although it gets a bad rap. The body does need sodium, it just needs to be used wisely.

Fresh Herbs

Let her cook up a fresh pizza or famous spaghetti sauce with fresh herbs. The green herbs look pretty and add color to any hostess' kitchen.

Tea Book

For the hostess who loves tea, consider some light reading in the form of "Healthy Teas: Green-Black-Herbal-Fruit."

Spice Basket

Give the healthy hostess a gift basket of exotic spices. Ground cinnamon can be bitter, but not Saigon cinnamon. If the hostess loves to bake or use cinnamon in ice cream or coffee, give her this. Add a few other spices including Cardamom for a gift she'll use over and over again.
