The de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter is a follow-up to the company's previous DHC-2 Beaver, a highly successful utility transport that found worldwide use. The Otter is much larger than the Beaver, but retains many of the same design features and resulting performance characteristics. The Otter proved to be very useful transporting passengers and cargo to areas without landing strips or otherwise having restricted access. The Otter can be equipped with either skis or landing floats, and is capable of both taking off and landing on short surfaces. This STOL ability, combined with the general ruggedness of the aircraft, has made it very popular worldwide.
