When I decided to invest in a quality electric guitar, I didn't have more than a thousand dollars to spare. I wasn't necessarily looking for a bargain...just something I could afford at the time. So, I start trying out some Gibson SGs. As you can imagine, I fell in love with them immediately... Read full review »

Pros Great hard rock sound, affordable.
Cons None, really. This is an excellent, well-priced guitar.

And it’s not that hard on your wallet, either, roughly the same price as a Fender American Standard Strat, for which you get all the tonal qualities of an SG Standard.

The Gibson SG has been an icon in the guitar world since its introduction in 1961 as a replacement for the... Read full review »

SG Simplicity

Pros Light weight body, fast, chunky Gibson neck, great bottom end tone
Cons Kluson tuners and dot inlays

Tony Iommi. Angus Young. Carols Santana. What do all of these names evoke in the guitar player's mind? The Gibson SG, of course. Each of the above skilled players, and many not named, gave the Gibson SG its popularity and stage character in the 60?s and 70's. But it wasn?t on the little... Read full review »

Introduction
I have owned and played many guitars over the years but one model that has slipped past me until recently was the Gibson SG. Don't get me wrong, I like the SG. It is just that I really like my well worn Gibson Les Paul and always felt like the SG was the same thing with only a... Read full review »

Pros Gibson Quality, Looks Good, Sounds Great, Feel
Cons None

The Gibson SG Special and the Gibson Les Paul Special are the least expensive variants of each guitar in the Gibson line. I wasn't so hot about the Les Paul since Gibson ditched the archtop design, but the Gibson SG Special is definitely a different story.

Gibson SG Special Limited Edition

bygaryguitar1117 May 20, 2008
10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Light, good tones, playability, a USA made, pro guitar bargain.
Cons A bit neck heavy, inferior tuners.
Recommended it? Yes

This is sort of an unusual version of the lower priced SG Special in that it features an ebony fingerboard and gold hardware. Like the Special, it is equipped with the 490T bridge and 490R neck humbucker pickups. I like these fine, although if given a choice, I would rather have '57 Classics or... Read full review »

I used to use the practice rooms at the military base which was open to military personnel and guests (like me) and they provided instruments in soundproof rooms with instruments. They had Yamaha drums, a Squier P-Bass, a Squier strat with locking trem, and two Gibson SG Specials. Most musicians... Read full review »

10 Helpfuls 11 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros GREAT sound, great look, great feel, awesome dependability, great price
Cons not the best tuners
Recommended it? Yes

The Gibson SG Special is the best guitar available for it's price. It's got a great feel, great look, and most importantly, a great sound.

This guitar has a retail price of about $999, but you can very easily find one for $650 or less. The tuners are not the best quality, but will work. If... Read full review »

Pros Comfortable to play, sounds great.
Cons What cons?

First of all I must confess that I fell in love with SGs the very first time I played one. This is the third one I have owned. The Special is the cheapest of the range but it's the details that have been cut not the quality of materials. Its my current first guitar and likely to stay that way for... Read full review »
